Hungarian 'Redwork' Embroidered Pillow

Hungarian 'Redwork' Embroidered Pillow

These antique redwork pillows were made in Hungary in the first half of the twentieth century. Each has a linen ground embellished with red wool using techniques related to the English tradition of crewelwork. The practise of embroidering natural or bleached linen and cotton homewares with red thread was prevalent across central Europe in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and also spread to the United States. In Europe it was particularly popular in Hungary, where a distinctive style using thicker threads of red wool developed, eventually becoming an iconic example of the country’s rich folk traditions.

These square pillows are sold individually but make a perfect pair together. Different towns and regions all developed unique designs so they were almost certainly made at the same time and in the same place.

It measures approximately 50 x 50 x 10 cm.
