Hungarian 'Redwork' Embroidered Pillow Case

Hungarian 'Redwork' Embroidered Pillow Case

This antique redwork pillows was made in Hungary in the first half of the twentieth century. It has a linen ground embellished with red wool using techniques related to the English tradition of crewelwork. The practise of embroidering natural or bleached linen and cotton homewares with red thread was prevalent across central Europe in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and also spread to the United States. In Europe it was particularly popular in Hungary, where a distinctive style using thicker threads of red wool developed, eventually becoming an iconic example of the country’s rich folk traditions.

This rectangular example is decorated with a design of stylised flowers, and fastened at one end with red wool ties.

It measures approximately 54 x 39 x 20 cm.
