10 Piece Russian Doll

10 Piece Russian Doll

A traditional nesting doll, in the iconic Semyonovo style. These high-quality dolls are carved and painted in Russia by skilled artisans. They are richly decorated, particularly the largest doll with it's wealth of detail. Even the smallest piece - which measures just 13mm high - is delicately depicted in traditional clothing.

Nesting dolls have been produced in Russian since the end of the nineteenth century when the idea was imported from Japan. The Japanese had been producing sets of nesting dolls representing Buddhist deities. The first Russian set was carved by Vasily Zvyozdochkin and painted by Sergey Malyutin, who had the idea of recasting the gods as Russian peasants. The dolls proved very popular, winning prizes at various world's fairs and international exhibitions. Within a few decades they were well-established as a symbol of Russian culture and craftsmanship - a status they still hold today.

The largest doll in this 10 piece set is approximately 27 cm high; the smallest is just 13mm.

Please note that this is a hand made product so there is some slight variation in the size and design of each set.

It measures approximately 27 x 13 x 13 cm.
