Transylvanian Spoon Shelf

Transylvanian Spoon Shelf

A vintage spoon shelf, from Transylvania in Romania. It is typical of the painted folk furniture made by Hungarian settlers to the region. In contrast with other Romanian folk furniture it is decorated with flowers and birds - motifs chosen not for their spiritual meaning, but simply for their beauty. Here these are depicted in a lively and joyful folk art style.

The shelf was made in the mid-twentieth century. It would have originally been used to display richly decorated spoons, which would have sat in the raised grooves across the centre of the piece.

It measures approximately 83 x 33 x 8 cm.
