Transylvanian Wedding Chest dated 1891

Transylvanian Wedding Chest dated 1891

This chest was commissioned for a wedding in June 1891. It was made in Transylvania, and is decorated with traditional Romanian symbols. It is in good original condition, with attractive navy paint and an abstract design of tulips in a vase typical of the region. Inside an inscription records the date and the name of the bride.

Chests like these were used to carry the bride’s possessions to her new house. This is an opportunity to own a piece of social history and an original folk art antique.

The chest measures 62 x 106 x 60 cm with the lid closed. With the lid open but propped upright against a wall it measures approximately 115 x 106 x 65 cm. If there is no wall to rest on, the lid opens further and rests at an angle. In this case it is 105 x 106 x 80, but it still needs 115 cm height clearance.
