Vintage Roma Jacket

Vintage Roma Jacket

A vintage jacket, worn by the Roma community in Transylvania. This unique piece was made completely by hand in the late twentieth century, incorporating older fabrics. The bright colours and eye-catching embellishments are typical of Roma traditions and tastes.

The jacket is made from purple wool printed with a traditional floral pattern, and embellished with navy and white patchwork and ribbon trim. It uses older fabrics for the patchwork and the lining, a thrifty touch that shows it’s authenticity as part of a living folk tradition.

It would have originally been worn tucked into a traditional waist belt, hence the unstructured bottom edge. This could be left as it is for a contemporary look, or hemmed for a neater finish.

Shown on a model who is 5”7 and a size 10.
